INTERTRADEIRELAND FUSION PROGRAMME – HOW IT WORKS
The InterTradeIreland FUSION Programme offers Graduates an opportunity to manage technology transfer projects with some of the most progressive companies on the island of Ireland. FUSION gives companies access to the wealth of expertise and facilities in our universities and colleges across the island of Ireland, allowing them to make strategic advances in innovation. FUSION initially develops partnerships between companies with a technology need on one side of the border, and colleges or universities that can provide the required specialist expertise on the other side. The partners work collectively to plan a specific project that will solve a technology need within the company. A high calibre Graduate is then employed to spearhead the project for a period of up to 1 year and act as the link between the university and the company. The successful FUSION Graduate will receive an attractive package and will also be given the opportunity to gain a fully-funded Post Graduate Diploma in Management from the Smurfit Business School in UCD.

In this instance Multihog Ltd and Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) have partnered to carry out the project described below.

MULTIHOG LTD
Multihog Ltd manufactures a range of multipurpose implement carriers for the international highway and winter maintenance market. The company have appointed a member of staff as the Company Supervisor on the project. Further information about Multi-hog Ltd is available at www.multihog.com.

QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY BELFAST
The NI Technology Centre (NITC) is one of Queen’s University’s primary links with industry and is recognised as one of the foremost contributors to Northern Ireland industry. Over the last 40 years the Centre has worked in partnership with companies to improve their competitiveness through enhanced design and manufacturing techniques and it is hoped that through involvement in Fusion, the NITC will be able to expand and build on this strong track record to consolidate their position on the island of Ireland.
One of the NITCs key areas of expertise is in New Product Introduction (NPI). A key aspect of this project will be the use of Finite Element modelling techniques to virtually prototype and test new designs in order to facilitate the tight timescales required by Multihog. The use of FEA allows detailed visualization of structures (where they bend or twist, and indicates the distribution of stresses and displacements) – vital information for Multihog. FEA software provides a wide range of simulation options and allows entire designs to be constructed, refined, and optimized before the design is manufactured. This Partnership will provide the academic team with a model of how the design process can be integrated with state of the art design and testing techniques and, crucially, how this expertise can be applied to an SME where companies have significantly less resources (but often equally complex and challenging design and communication problems) than their multinational competitors. The successful integration of the new processes into Multihog’s existing design processes will also provide a significant challenge, but once embedded, the company will have the capability to apply the same design processes in other projects. The introduction of the new design and testing procedures will be a significant driver in developing a culture of innovation and continuous improvement throughout all sections of the company.
The academic partners will provide direction and facilitate the development and embedding of a customised solution which fits the operational requirements and budget constraints of Multihog. Additionally, the multidisciplinary nature, and environmental conditions that Multihog’s products operate in will be another challenge to be understood and overcome. This Partnership will broaden academic experience in this strategically important area and will inform teaching and future research in this area.
The academic institute has appointed a member of its staff as the Academic Supervisor to provide the required specialist expertise for the project. Further information about QUB is available at www.qub.ac.uk
